Nationalism And War Essays - Modern History Of Germany,

Patriotism And War Does patriotism have a relationship with the reasons for the wars somewhere in the range of 1792 and 1914? This can be contested through the occasions of the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, the unification battles of Germany and Italy in the late 1800's, the Alliance frameworks of the late 1800's and the death of the Austrian archduke before the episode of World War 1. During the French Revolution in 1792, an exertion was made to expel Austrian nearness from French grounds. This came to fruition to some degree since King Louis XVI needed to look for help from the Austrians to expel the reformers, convincing France to proclaim war on Austria. The Jacobins were worried about the possibility that that this war would irreversibly affect the Revolution. In this way the Jacobins, having confidence in having an obligation to the country, lectured nationalistic and liberal standards to the whole country, utilizing each sort of correspondence accessible to them at that point. Jacobins propelled enthusiasm in the youngsters drafted into the war to draw upon their own patriotism to battle for France. This prompted triumph over Austria and all the while, France gained Belgium. Despite the fact that patriotism was utilized to raise the expectations of the French individuals to triumph, it was not the reason for the war. ?The American and French unrests were piv otal stages throughout the entire existence of radicalism.? (Perry, 377). During these unrests, indications of nationalistic thoughts became clear that were related with later wars in Europe. The Napoleonic wars were a continuation of the upheaval, which were not any more dependent on nationalistic thoughts than the transformation itself. Napoleon set out in 1799 to overcome Europe in plans to run an Empire similarly as Charlemagne and Alexander the Great did. He set out to achieve this by over-tossing the Directory and introducing a legislature called the Consulate. In time, he expanded his capacity to a point where he was in all out control and naming himself the Emperor of France. A significant number of the wars during this time prompted nationalistic sentiments in the nations that Napoleon had prevailed. This got noticeable in the obstruction of the Spanish and Prussians after Napoleon vanquished them. Spain revolted on the grounds that Napoleon removed the benefits of the nobles and made his sibling, who the Spanish thought about an outsider, lord. Thus, during the War of Liberation, devoted and nationalistic standards drove Prussia to rebel against the French attac k. With incredible energy and patriotism, Prussia vanquished France in1813. The Napoleonic Wars were not wars of patriotism, yet were of one man's fantasy about being a hero. At some other point ever, Bismarck was instrumental in the unification of Germany. It was his hunger for development and Prussian guideline all through Germany that drove him. It was during the unification of the southern states that patriotism assumed a basic job. With the assistance of Austria, Bismarck's first strike was at Denmark in 1864. Austria just participated with the expectation that Schleswig and Holstein would not turn out to be a piece of Prussia. This was an impetus for the Austro-Prussian war in 1866 that brought about the annihilation of Austria. In understanding, Prussia accepted regional authority over Schleswig and Holstein and other German states. Subsequently, this prompted the unification of the northern states, keep Austria separate from Prussian issues and leaving Prussia as the chief intensity of Germany. In making this progress, Bismarck dismissed parliamentary forces that left him a loathed man by numerous dissidents. Bismarck's activities show that patrio tism was not a factor, however rather it was his craving to grow A prussian area at any expense. Bismarck utilized patriotism as a significant device in finishing the unification. ?Utilizing the empty Spanish seat, Bismarck fashioned a message, suggesting that Napoleon and King William had offended one another.? (Perry, 404) This prompted high sentiments of Nationalism all through Germany, and prompted an encounter among Prussia and France. This war, known as the Franco-Prussia War, brought about the southern German states restricting together in national solidarity to go to Prussia's guide. This moving was as Bismarck anticipated. Focal Europe in 1871 gave testimony regarding an incredible country and the last strides in the unification of Germany, later to get known as the German Empire. This likewise gave them the required capacity to play

Theme of Revenge in Shakespeares Hamlet Essay - 872 Words

For a play to be considered a revenge tragedy, revenge has to be a prevalent theme throughout. Revenge needs to be intertwined in character interactions, and have a strong hold on the driving force of the plot. The desires of Hamlet, Laertes, and young Fortinbras each exhibit how the plot of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare revolves entirely around revenge. The theme of revenge starts off very early in the play, when Hamlet speaks with the ghost of his deceased father. When the ghost tells Hamlet how Claudius murdered him, Hamlet is infuriated and overtaken with feelings of responsibility to right the wrong that has been done; to murder Claudius. The portrayal pf Hamlet’s initial undert aking of his insanity act is easily shown by what he says to Gertrude, That essentially am not in madness, but mad in craft. ( ---) This shows that Hamlet was only acting crazy as a component of his revenge scheme. However, later in the play we witness the murder of Polonius by Hamlet. Hamlet killed Polonius without meaning to, thinking he was killing the king who murdered his father. But right as he realizes what he has done, he has no sympathy or regret for his actions, and simply brushes it off as a mistake well spent. Hamlet says after the deed, How now? A rat? Dead, for a ducat, dead! Hamlet (III, iv, 23) This quote is clearly an argument for Hamlet’s right state of mind, and only further develops the plot of the story. He begins to become a reckless killing machine, which changes from what he wanted in the beginning; to only kill Claudius. The desire and thirst for revenge in Hamlet’s self overtook his senses of better judgment, and he began to act on impulse. Agile Integration of Project Management †Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Agile Integration of Project Management. Answer: Introduction Arabtec Construction LLC is a construction firm based in UAE. They are willing to enhance the business activities of their construction company. They have decided to follow the agile project methodologies. The report will focus on the operational improvement direction of Arabtec by taking up the agile project management. The capabilities and the benefits that agile project management can offer will be explained in the report. The problems that Arabtec can offer will be highlighted as well. The procedures applying which the current operations management can be embellished will be explained along with the suggested changes. The operational improvement direction (lean vs agile) of Arabtec Construction LLC in terms of business goals that are sought to be achieved Lean and Agile project management can enhance the business activities of Arabtec Construction LLC (Arabtec). Both the lean and agile methodologies have certain similarities and the differences (Dyba, Dingsoyr and Moe 2014). There are about five lean principles associated which can assist Arabtec to conduct the business operations and those principles are a specific value, perfection, pull, identification of the value stream and the flow. The value is identified based on the customers wish or demand. Afterwards, once the value gets detected, the value stream is defined by the non-value added actions, as well as the value-added actions and the value stream, can be calculated by the product manufactured from the scratch and reaching out to the hands of the customers. The value flow can help to discriminate the value-adding activities, non-value adding activities and the enablers (White and Fellow 2014). The non-value adding activities are eliminated and after those value-adding activiti es getting eliminated the wastes get eliminated. Later when the customer needs it, the value is handed over to the customer. There are several types of lean wastes which must be removed for efficiently conducting the business activities within Arabtec. In the construction industry when excess production occurs, the excess materials get accumulated, this excess production must be mitigated if possible, the removal of this excess production can effectively reduce the cost of the production (Larson and Gray 2013). The lean project methodology is responsible for eliminating the wastage of time, eliminates the waste time due to the various kinds of approvals. Generally, lots of time gets wasted due to the transport of the construction materials and parts of Arabtec. Thus the transportation facilities must be eased and the transportation must be on the basis of JIT principle (Conforto et al. 2014). The inventory wastes must be properly maintained that means the finished products and the products that are under construction and the raw materials involved must be taken into consideration as that can save dollars for the company. The defective products or the defective materials that fail to meet the expectations of the customers demands an d thus it is considered as waste, thus the adoption of lean project management can help Arabtec for good and removing the waste the business operations of Arabtec can be embellished. The agile project management can act as an effective tool for the improvement of the business operations. There are various agile services and agile values associated with the Agile Software Development -the individuals, the working software, the user's collaborative approach, response (Schwalbe 2015). The construction industry is evolving every day adopting new technologies and the new tools. By adopting these new technologies, the stakeholders and the team members can get their job done. The workings must be done in accordance with the documents made and according to the customers demands and the customers requests (Serrador and Pinto 2015). The contract is made between the customer and the builder of the construction industry. To make the communications smooth with the customers, the builders must learn the LP system and should make necessary changes in the project as per proposed by the customer. After the discussion is made, the project must be completed as per the customers dem ands and modifications should be made as per customers wishes. After getting approval from the customers the builders must carry on their workings and finish the project. After finishing the entire project, the project should be handed over to the customers (Hoda and Murugesan 2016). In case of LP systems, weekly plans are made and based on the plan, the employees must communicate with the customers regularly to successfully accomplish the project goals. The current operations management system and analysis of the operational capabilities of Arabtec Construction LLC Arabtec by adopting the agile project management can get improved results, the business activities and the construction activities of the organization can be embellished. The project methodology can bring good in the civil construction, concrete products, the contracting segments and the pre-casting buildings. All these can provide them with the edge so that the Arabtec can get a strong position in the construction market of Dubai (Lin et al. 2014). The adoption of agile project management can cater them the value-added service like the design services to the customers. The management of the company has also decided to share the wealth of Arabtec with the shareholders of the company by giving away fifty percent of the paid-up capital share to the public subscription. The company has also declared thirty percent stock dividend (Kerzner 2013). They have planned to approve the dividend policy which depends on the capital expenditure prerequisites, the bank financing, and working capital . Arabtec can have the construction procedures, the construction planning and the construction schedule. Generally, due to the delays the construction cost increases, the labour costs increase too. The project methodology can mitigate all these risks (Spundak 2014). The agile project management can help Arabtec in furnishing the business activities thus Arabtec can have the idea to complete the project at the right location at the right time within the deadline and with right guidelines. The overruns and all the delays can affect the projects performance and that is why it can be concluded that the legal issues can be solved due to the adoption of the project management and the construction project eventually become successful (Conforto and Amaral 2016). Discussion of existing problems and weaknesses in the current operations management system towards becoming leaner of agiler The true agile is practised on rare occasions: The Agile has the best tools and the procedures incorporated and by following those principles any enterprise can get immense benefits. The Agile project methodology is iterative, the project methodology is very easy to adapt (Leach 2014). Thus Arabtec will have to adapt the agile project methodology and will have to adapt to the methodologies to the fullest otherwise the business operations of the enterprise can get disrupted. The employees of Arabtec will have to follow the guidelines strictly. Customer interaction is mandatory: The construction industry like Arabtec needs to interact and communicate with the customers daily to detect whether all the activities are getting performed according to their wish or demands. The customer interaction is an absolute necessity for the agile methodology to implement. The customer may be some higher officials may be CEO of any other company who is always busy, but communication is mandatory, the customer or the clients must monitor the activities closely and should approve everything is going right, only after the approval Arabtec must continue with the work (Gonzalez 2014). The interaction with the busy customers become hectic as well as getting approvals from the customers from time to time can be hectic. However, they still have to cooperate otherwise the entire project can become dispute and can fail completely leading to huge loss of the company. The Agile project methodology goes well with the teams co-located teams: The project management in the construction industry works well within office premises, the team members conducting the in-house activities can get immense benefits from the agile methodology. However, in case of the construction industry, it is not possible to carry out the business operations in same locations, that is why the Arabtec employees can face challenges adapting the agile methodology (Drury-Grogan 2014). Arabtec can face difficulties while carrying out the business activities at the national level or the international level. As a result of that, sometimes the business operations can become quite costly. The agile methodology is difficult to adapt for the large projects: The project methodology works well for the small projects, it goes well with the small organization as well, however, Arabtec being a giant company can face problems as different teams are working in different areas, even in different locations. A team is working on a particular data, and the data has been generated by some other team located in geographically dispersed location. That is why the team must communicate among themselves (Laitinen 2016). Along with that, the agile project methodology works well within a small location, within the office premises, Arabtec can face difficulties due to the construction works at the dispersed locations. Thus it can affect the overall productivity of the company, the scalability of the business operations can get affected a lot due to this agile methodology and thus Arabtec should look upon this factor. Agile weakness on the architectural planning: In the construction industry the architectural planning involves the entire structure of the building, the materials used for constructing the building. Also, the software which must be utilized for conducting the construction procedure must be well analysed and must be worked upon. All the enterprises have to predict and then consider all the aspects associated with the construction industry and Arabtec is no exception (Hornstein 2015). Arabtec will have to analyse the building materials, the structure of the building and the analyse the software used in Arabtec, this takes a whole lot of time. They need to properly manage those factors too. Therefore, delays occur but they need to consider the issues otherwise that can cause serious disruption. The project methodology having limited project planning, project tracking and the project estimation: The agile project methodology generally reduces the planning for a particular project by utilizing certain backlogs (Chagas et al. 2014). It also caters priority to the list of software product land it focuses more on a fixture of the project deadlines. Also for each and every sprint, the level-of-effort gets estimated and the estimation is generally rough in nature. This kind of approach is acceptable in case of small projects, but it delivers to deliver the same amount of efficiency to the large projects and to the large organisations. The third party clients of Arabtec sometimes ask for the scope which the project management fails to deliver, also the senior manager of the client company of Arabtec sometimes ask for the details of the specimens used for the construction industry (Kautz, Johansen and Uldahl 2014). The aforesaid project management fails due to lightweight planning f ails to deliver the details of the project. vii. The agile project methodology needs more and more rework: The project methodology that Arabtec has planned to adopt requires lots of lots of clarification and lots and lots of reworks, this procedure is basically known as the refactoring, the refactoring takes a huge loads of money and Arabtec will have to pay heavy (Lehnen, Schmidt and Herstatt 2016). Thus for the project management and the rework, Arabtec needs to spend heavily. viii. The challenges occur due to the contractual commitments: The agile project methodology is very difficult to detail the fixed-bid contracts (Nicholls, Lewis and Eschenbach 2015). The senior officials often get dissatisfied due to not getting the details of the projects like the project scope, the project deadline and the estimated costs for the project. Light documentation: The agile project methodology prefers verbal communication to written documentation that is misconception occurs in between the clients Arabtec can face the same difficulty, can face the same issue while constructing any product (Pope-Ruark 2015). Due to the lack of proper documentation, it is really difficult for them to maintain and enhance the quality of the construction project. Discussion of how the operations management system can be reoriented to be able to achieve the business goals for the Arabtec Construction LLC Getting conversant with the agile methodologies: The leaders or the senior managers of Arabtec must be responsible, they must be knowledgeable of all the project methodologies. The seniors must discuss with his subordinates and must educate them with the agile methodologies that can bring good to Arabtec. Concentrate more on people over the processes: The deserved members of the team must be given the responsibility to carry out the business activity. Arabtec must divide the tasks to the employees according to their proficiency as that can enhance the productivity of the enterprise and Arabtec can earn huge loads of money because of that. Arabtec should hire employees who are motivated and are willing to work hard and have sound communication skills (Nicholas and Steyn 2017). The employees must be creative and should think something out of the box. Establishment of self-organising groups: Arabtec should construct self-organization groups for carrying out all the construction activities within the enterprise. That can help them to carry out the business activities of the team members or other team located at geographically dispersed location (Kerzner 2017). The concept of self-organising can be truly beneficial as it will help the team members to complete a particular task, and based on the task the other team members can continue their work automatically, a better interaction can be established as a result of this approach. Redefining success for the projects: After the development of the project the testing team must check and verify the construction materials and the construction parts manufactured at Arabtec, if the parts pass the tests they are shipped to the customers or the clients. Encouraging the team members to speak well: The team members should be encouraged regularly by the team leaders and the team seniors to follow the project methodologies and should maintain a healthy relationship with the team members. The seniors must communicate and interact regularly and should help them at need. Empowering the product owners: The business leaders must appoint the appropriate the proper POs and the POs must be knowledgeable about all the facets of the agile project methodologies and they should be able to take the critical decisions for the company (Stare 2013). The key decisions and the critical decisions are capable to provide Arabtec the substantial benefits to gain profits and money. vii. Fund for experimenting: The experiments require lots of funding. Arabtec must adopt the project methodologies and along with that Arabtec must save money and spend for the experiments wisely. The experiments need to be conducted as that can provide them the competitive edge and can give them opportunities to stay ahead of the other competitors. viii. The monthly reviews: The monthly reviews can give them the progress of the current construction project (Kerzner 2017). Thus the employees, the leaders and the clients can have a clear view of all the business activities and thus the ongoing projects progress can be kept tracked of. Discussion of how the suggested changes should be implemented A governance body must be implemented: Arabtec must establish a governance body that is capable to mitigate the risks, the threats and the problems and all the obstacles within the company. The problem resolution can be achieved by means of open communication among the clients, the customers and the stakeholders and the leaders (Gonzalez 2014). Arabtec must implement a governance structure that is both lean and tight. A communication structure must be implemented to facilitate the employees of the employees, the stakeholders and the sponsors of the construction company. The appropriate definition of the sprint: Arabtec must be aware of the goal or the objectives in mind when adopting the agile-lean project methodology and the carrying out the business activities. A particular task requires a lot of time to get completed. The task must be dispersed into multiple tasks and each task must be completed within the stipulated time that is must be completed within the stipulated deadline (Drury-Grogan 2014). This can approach can give them to make the incremental progress, this approach has the capability to maximize the efforts of the team to manage the construction project and this can help them in the long run. iii. Conduct daily meetings: Arabtec must conduct a fifteen minutes meeting every day. The seniors along with his subordinates must discuss the project requirements and the projects progress that can give them the overview of all the aspects of the projects. The seniors and the clients can be assured that the project is progressing well (Laitinen 2016). This approach can help them to know every possible risks, threats and vulnerability associated with the project and the company. After the ending of the sprint retrospective: A project task is divided into multiple subtasks, it is viable to complete one task and then move subsequently to the next task. Arabtec must not rush. After successful completion of one task, they must analyse the task, the clients feedback and the senior members feedback are important and must be taken into consideration (Lin et al. 2014). The feedback must be documented as well. The documentation can help them to conduct the business operations in the agile and effective way in future. Communication: The communication must be established among the stakeholders, the sponsors, the clients, the leaders and the employees of Arabtec (Kerzner 2013). The communication can pave way for various solutions that can assist to carry out the business activities smoothly and efficiently. Conclusion It can be concluded from the above discourse that the project management can enhance the business operations of the construction industry. The productivity can be increased, along with that they can get monetary gain as well. The benefits that Arabtec can achieve have been well described in the report. The operation management model of Arabtec needs to be reoriented, in this way the business operations of Arabtec can get enhanced. The seniors as well the subordinates of Arabtec must follow the project methodologies, the teams working in dispersed location must cooperate and follow the project methodologies to successfully accomplish the project and carrying out the business operations of Arabtec. Macro Environment free essay sample

There are many factors in the macro-environment that will affect the decisions of the managers of any organization. Tax changes, new laws, trade barriers, demographic change and government policy changes are all examples of macro change. To help analyze these factors managers can categories them using the model. This classification distinguishes between: Political factors: These refer to government policy such as the degree of intervention in the economy. What goods and services does a government want to provide? To what extent does it believe in subsidizing firms? What are its priorities in terms of business support? Political decisions can impact on many vital areas for business such as the education of the workforce, the health of the nation and the quality of the infrastructure of the economy such as the road and rail system. Economic factors: These include interest rates, taxation changes, economic growth, inflation and exchange rates. As you will see throughout the Foundations of Economics book economic change can have a major impact on a firms behavior. We will write a custom essay sample on Macro Environment or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page For example: Economic factors: These include interest rates, taxation changes, economic growth, inflation and exchange rates. As you will see throughout the Foundations of Economics book economic change can have a major impact on a firms behavior. For example: * Higher interest rates may deter investment because it costs more to borrow. * A strong currency may make exporting more difficult because it may raise the price in terms of foreign currency. * Inflation may provoke higher wage demands from employees and raise costs. * Higher national income growth may boost demand for a firms products. Social factors: Changes in social trends can impact on the demand for a firms products and the availability and willingness of individuals to work. In the UK, for example, the population has been ageing. This has increased the costs for firms who are committed to pension payments for their employees because their staff is living longer. It also means some firms such as Asda have started to recruit older employees to tap into this growing labour pool. The ageing population also has impact on demand: for example, demand for sheltered accommodation and medicines have increased whereas demand for toys is falling. Technological factors: New technologies create new products and new processes. MP3 players, computer games, online gambling and high definition TVs are all new markets created by technological advances. Online shopping, bar coding and computer aided design are all improvements to the way we do business as a result of better technology. Technology can reduce costs, improve quality and lead to innovation. These developments can benefit consumers as well as the organizations providing the products. Environmental factors: Environmental factors include the weather and climate change. Changes in temperature can impact on many industries including farming, tourism and insurance. With major climate changes occurring due to global warming and with greater environmental awareness this external factor is becoming a significant issue for firms to consider. The growing desire to protect the environment is having an impact on many industries such as the travel and transportation industries (for example, more taxes being placed on air travel and the success of hybrid cars) and the general move towards more environmentally friendly products and processes is affecting demand patterns and creating business opportunities. Legal factors: These are related to the legal environment in which firms operate. In recent years in the UK there have been many significant legal changes that have affected firms behavior. The introduction of age discrimination and disability discrimination legislation, an increase in the minimum wage and greater requirements for firms to recycle are examples of relatively recent laws that affect an organization’s actions. Legal changes can affect a firms costs (e. g. if new systems and procedures have to be developed) and demand (e. g. if the law affects the likelihood of customers buying the good or using the service). Different categories of law include: * consumer laws: these are designed to protect customers against unfair practices such as misleading descriptions of the product * competition laws: these are aimed at protecting small firms against bullying by larger firms and ensuring customers are not exploited by firms with monopoly power * Employment laws: these cover areas such as redundancy, dismissal, working hours and minimum wages. They aim to protect employees against the abuse of power by managers * Health and safety legislation: these laws are aimed at ensuring the workplace is as safe as is reasonably practical.

Homer essays

Homer essays As I explored the Museum of Fine Arts, I came upon a portrait that I enjoyed. As I looked at this work of art longer and longer, I decided I wanted to do my Fine Arts paper on "Driftwood" by Winslow Homer. The painting is located in the Gund Gallery and adjacent to the Fenway stairs. Being secluded because of a beam, much attention is drawn to this magnificent painting. It is especially protected due to its location. In the entrance across the hall sits a security guard watching over the gallery it presides in. This life-like picture spans 24 1/2 x 28 1/2 in. Its frame was wisely chosen and is gold in color. The frame complements the colors used in the canvas. The design of wavy lines in the frame gives not only the frame character, but also the portrait. The painting "Driftwood" takes place in Prout's Neck, Maine. "This is where Homer lived for twenty-seven years before he died. Homer painted "Driftwood" in 1909, the year before he died. This was the last work Homer ever completed (MFA, "Driftwood")." To sum up the painting, a man is trying to save a huge tree trunk that was washed up on rocks next to the raging sea. He looks very wet and the water is dangerously close to him. The trunk is extremely large and I doubt he will ever move the figure with just the rope he has in his hand. I believe that Homer is trying to express determination and the willingness to succeed by showing one man trying to save a very large tree trunk. He adds the stormy weather to show that the man will stop at nothing to do what he believes is right. This is an all out fight between man and nature and unfortunately, nature usually wins. Homer's work for the most part is nonobjective in its subject matter. The rough water shows the power of Mother Nature in a beautiful setting. The green-gray sky portrays a terrible storm hitting the shores. The only piece of this work that may possibly become objective is the fact that the man loc...

Contemporary Issues in Financial Services Essay - 1

Contemporary Issues in Financial Services - Essay Example Financial intermediaries bring together borrowers and lenders in financial markets by interacting with savers and borrowers simultaneously and by producing a set of services facilitating the transformation of liabilities into assets like transforming deposits into loans. Though financial markets can also bring together lenders and borrowers directly, still the existence of financial intermediaries is of utmost importance. This is because the direct lending approach between savers and borrowers has proved inefficient as this process can be directly traced to the barter system where there is always a need for double coincidence of wants. This function of transformation is termed as intermediation. Through this process, financial intermediaries facilitate savers and borrowers to have indirect lending and borrowing. Financial intermediaries can be banks, building societies, financial advisor or broker, insurance companies, life insurance companies, mutual fund and pension fund. Firstly, national bank serves as a financial intermediary by accepting deposits and placing in various securities and mortgage loans. By doing this, individual investors are linked by banks with financial markets and demanders of credit. The intermediaries actually act as a middleman between firm raising funds and investors (Rampini & Viswanathan, 2012, pp.1-2). Requirement of financial intermediary Though financial markets can also bring together lenders and borrowers directly, still the existence of financial intermediaries is of utmost importance. This is because the direct lending approach between savers and borrowers has proved inefficient as this process can be directly traced to the barter system where there is always a need for double coincidence of wants. People with savings will want to lend the amount available with them for a particular time period. For this, one will have to find a person who needs approximately the same amount of fund for the same time period. Searching of such a person is a difficult task. Again, direct lending necessitates a negotiable contract. Transactions of repayments of principle and interest are required to account for. Direct lenders will have limited ability to diversify and minimum exposure to default risk by lending small amounts to many borrowers but the transaction costs would be relatively higher. Here financial intermediaries reduce the transaction costs and minimize risks. Thus, it improves the economic efficiency. Generally, the financial intermediaries perform the following functions: i. It facilitates transactions. ii. It creates a portfolio. iii. It spreads risks over time. iv. It eases household liquidity constraints. v. It reduces the problem of asymmetric information. In addition to intermediation, sometimes brokerage function also takes place by financial institutions in bringing together buyers and sellers to complete financial transactions. Stockbrokers specialize in brokerage to perform such task. Types of fina ncial intermediaries Fee based or advisory financial intermediaries These financial intermediaries charge a fee for rendering advisory financial services. Their services include: i. Issue management ii. Underwriting iii. Portfolio management iv. Corporate counselling v. Stock broking vi. Credit syndication vii. Mergers and acquisitions viii. Debenture trusteeship ix. Capital restructuring Asset based financial intermediaries The specific requirements of customers are met by these financial intermediaries. They provide the required asset or finance for rent or interest respectively. The income is earned by them from

CASE STUDY2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

CASE STUDY2 - Essay Example In addition, the European Commission desired to confine isolated spot advertisements to short time slots during sports programs only (Lainer, 2005). According to Lainer (2005, pg. 1), "We are truly disappointed. We think they have missed an opportunity really to modernise advertising rules in a fast-moving environment with new technologies and competition." As previously mentioned, RLT is Europe's largest television group, having 32 stations in all. These include France's M6 and the United Kingdom's Channel Five. According to Lainer (2005, pg. 1), "Traditional commercial broadcasters pressed for more flexibility in using commercials amid increased competition for advertising. They also say tougher rules on commercials during children's and news shows could endanger programmer-making in these fields. The growth of digital channels, web-based TV and viewers' commercial skipping devices have fragmented audiences and challenged the core advertising-driven business of traditional free-to-air broadcasters." The European Commission stands up for itself by claiming that they tried to support traditional commercial broadcasters as much as possible when they were writing their proposal. A couple of things it proposed that would support advertisers include allowing them to have commercials during the first 20 minutes of television shows-which they currently cannot do-and allow for product placement in television shows. The proposal of the addition of product placement sparked much criticism, where some individuals feared that television in the UK would become commercial-soaked like it is in the United States (Lainer, 2005). One of the major forces impacting the European advertising industry is the European Advertising Standards Alliance. According to EASA (2008, pg. 1), "The European Advertising Standards Alliance (EASA) is a non-profit organisation based in Brussels. EASA brings together national advertising self-regulatory organisations (SROs) and organisations representing the advertising industry in Europe. EASA is, on behalf of the advertising industry, the single authoritative voice on advertising self-regulation issues and promotes high ethical standards in commercial communications by means of effective self-regulation, while being mindful of national differences of culture, legal and commercial practice." The advertising industry in Europe faces a number of key challenges today. Among these are socially responsible advertising. According to Perez-Latre (2003, pg. 1): In recent years, the European advertising industry has made a clear self-control effort since its goal is to provide a solid alternative to more governmental advertising regulation. But the last change in the European Commission's Directive, "Television without Frontiers" (COM/2002, 6.I. 2003), has provoked fresh thinking. Today's main controversial topics are alcohol advertising, time constraints for advertising on television, norms on interactive television, sponsoring, self-promotion, teleshopping, and other advertising/programming content. Extreme commercialization of television programs is having an impact: Clutter has increased to levels that are unbearable for viewers. Pretty much every European Union market is regulated with regard to its advertising industry. Children's advertising is particularly affected. For instance, in

A Moment that Lasts Forever Essay Example for Free

A Moment that Lasts Forever Essay I turn around to see the audience cheering their lungs out for me. Even though I’ve been through so many competitions before, none of the competitions could even compare to the contrasting feelings I was having at the moment. Although at the time, I still did not know who won in the finals of one of the biggest competitions in California, nor did I know what the judges thought of me, I knew that I had successfully completed a memory that would have a big impact on my life. I knew that I had worked hard and tried my best, and even if I ended up not even winning a place, I would have earned something from this extreme event. My teacher had been trying to decide what piece to give me for my next competition: MTAC, the Music Teacher’s Association of California. What does that mean? It means that I will be competing in one of the biggest, and hardest competition in California again. It would be the 3rd time in this competition for me, after failing the first time, and barely achieving ‘Honorable Mention’ the second time. I knew that this was my chance, my chance to finally show all the critics, all the people that believed I was just a talentless girl with extremely well-known teachers, that I actually was able to play the piano. â€Å"Oh! How about this piece?† my mentor suggested.   I looked up to see my teacher, a young boy stuck in a old man’s body, look at me, so happy and excited about something that he was almost bouncing off the floor. I see him holding a green book, and I see as he opens the book to the 5th page, the words â€Å"Abegg Variations† by Schumann. I nearly fainted right there and then. â€Å"How did this teacher expect me to play this super hard piece that even Lang Lang made mistakes in when he played, when I couldn’t even play my Mendelssohn well?† I thought to myself, â€Å"but I probably can’t do anything about it, especially not with my mom looking like a dog that just managed to get its owner to give it a thousand bones, also.† The first big obstacle came quick enough. My mom announced that I was going to play at her student’s recital, only a few months after I first got the piece. I nearly fainted after all the screaming, crying, yelling I did. â€Å"It would be a good experience and excellent practice for your competition† she said. â€Å"But I’m not ready!† I replied back trying to use imploring eyes to achieve a change of mind. â€Å"You are playing, and that’s final!† she answered. Read more:  My Proudest Moment Essay I knew there was absolutely no point in arguing anymore, and that all I could do was practice. Turns out, I was completely right about one fact: I was not ready for this recital at all. I messed up, and I didn’t mess up small, I messed up humongous, huge, extreme, terrifyingly big. As I disembarked from the stage, I could just see how much practicing I would have to do to prepare for my second obstacle: my piano teacher’s recital. Apparently, all the practicing I did before this next recital was not enough, because I managed to embarrass myself at my piano teacher’s recital also. My fate was inevitable, and I knew by then that I was going to be practicing like crazy now, if I didn’t before. I also knew how furious my mom was going to be at me. My prediction was completely correct, as I was told to practice so much that my fingers were about to fall off. To be exact, I practiced sixty times for each variation, and Abegg Variations has multiple variations. T hough it took more than 4 hours every day, I stayed persistent, and slowly and steadily I improved. As I was about to go into a room for the first round of the competition, all I could think was†¦ â€Å"What if I mess up, what if I mess up†¦ I’m going to mess up, I’m going to mess up, I’M GOING TO MESS UP!!! GAHH~~!!!† The door holder called out, â€Å"Anna Yang†, and it was my turn. I went in, and was surprised to find three judges, different from the previous year. My face literally turned as bright as the sun when I did not see the judge that absolutely detests my teacher, *a*c* *e*s*n (for privacy reasons, I will exclude her name from this essay). I turned as hyper as a kid could become, and I was about to scream from happiness right then. Every single time I am in a competition, and she’s a judge, she always marks me down. Luckily, she was not here this time, and instead, sitting in her place, was a nice, friendly looking old lady, a not very skinny lady who’s facial expressions seemed a bit like the evil stepmother from Cinderella, and a Jasmine look-a-like lady who’s only difference from Jasmine was that she looked like she was about to poison me with a poisonous apple. As I bowed to them, I became more relaxed at the smile of the nice, friendly looking old lady. Although I was still frightened at the prospect of messing up, I was shaking a considerably less amount than I was before. I made a mistake, but I was lucky. Right when I made the mistake, the nice, friendly looking judge dropped her cushion from her chair, and everyone rushed to help her pick it up. My mistake had gone by unnoticed by the crowd. By that time, I was so ecstatic that my smile was about to reach the sky. The results of the first round came out soon enough. As I went on the MTAC website on my phone, I could hear both my mom’s heartbeat, and also my heartbeat beating as fast as a hare would beat while being chased by a extremely furious tiger. The page finally finished loading, and I scrolled down to see: Grand Prize: Anna Yang. I celebrated for about 2 minutes thinking about how all that practice had actually been beneficial, and then I realized what that meant†¦ I was going to have to compete one more time, this time against the winner of the Southern California group. I scrolled down to see who exactly I had to compete against during the final, and I went ballistic when I saw. Sherry Tang was the winner of Southern California. I was going to play against THE Sherry Tang, the girl who was on From the Top and won against college kids. The girl who won a national competition. By that time, I was already dead cast against the fact that I would never win, but my mom calmed me down with her comforting words, telling me that I should not give up, even if there is almost no chance of winning. I did not give up. I continued playing and practicing every day, and I ended up not regretting it. A few months later, a judge called out Sherry’s name before they called my name. As I heard the words â€Å"1st place, Anna Yang†, I walked towards the auditorium stage. As I walked on stage, I did not cry. I could only smile. Who wouldn’t? Why would you be unhappy about the fact that you had just won one of the biggest competitions in California? Though I do not practice as much anymore, I still always have a certain self-confidence while playing piano. I also learned that as long as I put in effort and I have fun, the audience and judges will also have fun, and they will feel the effort I have put in.

Compare And Contrast Thomas Be Essay -- essays research papers

The archetypal hero journey, Joseph Campbell states, is a typical series of heroic actions. Four stages form the hero journey: departure, trials, epiphany, and return (the stages do not necessarily occur consecutive with the listing). Death and resurrection of lifestyle and beliefs, spiritual journey, and finally rebirth form hero journey’s motif. An archetypal hero pattern is the transformation of the character’s conscience through trials and revelations. Lust, fear, and social duties tend to be the main trials heroes face. Campbell defines a hero as a character who overcomes his trials and gives his life to something superior to himself--committed extraordinary deeds. There are two types of heroes. The physical hero gives himself to rescue someone’s physical life or well-being; the spiritual hero returns to enlighten his people and, therefore, spare them misfortune or disastrous situations. Such characters enable the author to aid the reader in perceiving the positive aspects of negative situations and vice versa. Joseph Campbell’s hero journey outline provides an understanding for the paths heroes take pertaining to their specific circumstances.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Two characters that follow the hero journey are Job of the wisdom books of the Old Testament and Murder in the Cathedral’s Thomas Becket. Job is a fortunate and distinctively devout man. Satan wants to prove to God Job’s faith will falter if his blessings are obliterated. Satan creates an agonizing event sequence Job must suffer through. Job’s children, livestock, land, and health are taken away from him, and his comforters--three friends and a wife--believe Job deserves the turmoil and tell him he must repent his sins to regain his splendor. Becoming frustrated with the increasing agony he must endure, Job questions God’s actions but retains his faith. Thomas Becket’s story begins when King Henry II has trouble prosecuting church clergy under England’s law since the church they should try clergymen. Believing Becket will be a government ally, Henry appoints Becket (then King Henry’s chancellor) Archbishop. Becket finds the church has the right to try its, and holds God’s will above the king’s. Murder in the Cathedral begins with Becket, the current Archb... ...el assured his people will not be completely sorrowful when they lose their Archbishop. After speaking with his congregation, Becket is prepared for his death. Both Job and Becket return to their people in prayer.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Joseph Campbell’s hero journey interpretation outlines the sequences of Job’s and Thomas Becket’s heroic circumstances. Each character progresses through the hero journey stages even though they do not necessarily follow the pattern. Job and Becket have similarities in their journeys: both experience a lifestyle alteration, are met with four advisors, and return to their people prayerful and matured; but the processes the characters journey through are distinctly different. Both Becket and Job fit Campbell’s hero definition: one who overcomes his trials and gives himself to a superior being. Both Job and Becket overcome their trials and give themselves to God. The two characters are categorized as spiritual heroes because they return sharing their spiritual findings with others. Job and Thomas Becket are spiritual heroes who successfully fulfill every phase of the hero journey Joseph Campbell outlines.

Police explorer programs Essay

In Fair Haven, New Jersey the explorer program is meant for young adults that are interested in pursuing a future in law enforcement. The program will introduce the young adults to traits that police officers should have such as: hard work ethic, integrity, honesty, courage, respect, and most of all discipline. The police explorers assist with crowd control events and traffic direction. They are also able to ride along with police officers and see what a usual day is for a police officer. The Washington police explorers help youth to gain insight into a variety of programs that include classroom instruction as well as hands-on law enforcement activities. The explorers are also eligible for many college scholarships to assist in continuing education. The explorers also compete in the national explorer competition every two years. The national explorer is when thousands of law enforcement explorers and adult leaders come together for a week of team and individual competitions, seminars, demonstrations, exhibits, recreation and fun. The Knoxville police department explorer post is a volunteer organization that was formed to provide a law enforcement background and training to senior members of the boy scouts of America. The main goal of the police explorer post is to prepare young adults to become police officers through education, training, and work experience. Some of the basic training includes: traffic control, officer survival, patrol procedures, radio procedures, firearms, basic criminal law, defensive driving, and an overview of the police department. Some activities they assist in are DUI sobriety checkpoints, crime prevention events, downtown events and patrols, and search and recovery operations. In Cary, Illinois the police officer advisors train and give guidance to the explorers program in all non-hazardous functions of the Cary Police Department. The advisors generously donate their time, attending meetings at the police station every other Thursday from 7:30 to 9 pm. experienced police officers provide training in a variety of police related skills, such as traffic crash investigation, criminal investigations, domestic disputes, processing crime scenes, building searches and arrest techniques. The relationship between the Cary police department and the explorers program directly benefits both the community and the individual explorer. Thecommunity benefits through the hard work and volunteer activities of the Explorers Program, as they provide a variety of public services. Explorers assist Police Officers during the Village’s annual â€Å"Merry Cary Holiday Festival†, â€Å"National Night Out† and other community events. The explorer’s participation and training benefits them by proving an excellent foundation for careers in law enforcement and enables them to become more responsible citizens.

The Structure Of Eukaryotic Chromosomes - 1510 Words

Humans are all totally unique in one way. That one way is DNA. Human DNA is very complex and it takes on a certain structure in order for it to function correctly. Understanding the structure of eukaryotic chromosomes, or condensed forms of DNA, and how they function helps scientists understand how human DNA is unique. These highly specialized cells help eukaryotic organisms, such as humans, to sustain life. What is a eukaryotic organism? A eukaryotic organism is any organism with complex cells, or a single cell with a complex structure. These eukaryotic organisms cells genetic material is organized into chromosomes found in a nucleus. These eukaryotic cells also have membrane bound organelles, which distinguishes them from other types of organisms. Structure of Eukaryotic Chromosomes Multi celled organisms like human beings require a large amount of DNA. There are two meters of DNA in every human cell but the cell’s nucleus diameter is only 5-8 micrometers. So how does all that DNA fit into our cell’s nucleus? Well the very long double stranded DNA molecules are tightly packed into chromosomes, which are highly compacted. Chromosome 22, for example, has 48 million nucleotide pairs which, if stretched out end to end the DNA would extended 1.5 cm. Chromosome 22 during the stage of mitosis it measures at an astonishing 2 micrometers. This is ten thousand times tighter then if the DNA was stretched out all the way. DNA has the assistance of the chromosomal proteins, histonesShow MoreRelated Comparison of Genetic Information In Eukaryotes And Prokaryotes1567 Words   |  7 Pagescompare and contrast the genomes in eukaryotes and prokaryotes according to the perspective of Cell biology (The science that studies about c ells).
